After completing my own custom PC, I'm helping my buddy Kyle build his own. This thread will serve as notes and progression. Any help or thoughts from you guys will be appreciated, mine wouldn't have turned out as well without you. My goal is to build a machine capable of running Battlefield 3, at ultra settings, while staying under or around $1,000. (Shouldn't be easy.)

The project begins: 11/11/11

Casing and cooling:

Case: Antec 900 - Newegg - $60

Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast series 750W - Newegg - $70

Heatsick/Fan: Undecided

Additional case fans: Undecided

mobo & components:

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe, LGA 1155, duel ethernet - Amazon - $270

GFX Card: XFX Radeon 6950 2 GB (With Dirt 3) - Newegg - $250

Processor: Intel i5 2500k Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 - Newegg - $220

RAM: Corsair Dominator 8 GB DDR3, 9-9-9-24, duel channel - Amazon - $40

HDD, SSD:

SSD: Intel 320 series 79GB - Newegg - $ 81

HDD: Undecided

Drive Bays:

CD/DVD: ASUS SATA DVD/CD burner OEM - Newegg - $18

Bluray: Undecided

~~ Hardware Total: $1008 after rebates (so far)

Software:

OS:

External:

~~ Grand Total:

For around 1k seems pretty cheap ..

My comp uses:

Asus P8P67 delux

8gb (2x4gb) Corsair vengeance ram

I7 2600k

Antec truepower 750watt powersupply

Corsair Performance 3 128gb SSD (Got this since sandforce controllers had so many problems this was a slightly slower option since it runs on the Marvell controller)

Corsair obsidian 650D

WD Black 640gb

XFX Radeon 6870

That ran me about 1.5k last year, Prices are slightly lower but I don't think you'd be able to get anything to play BF3 on ultra since that requires a MUCH more powerful gfx card.. that will cost about 150$ more than mine.

Prices are a lot cheaper in the US though so maybe you can find a build for cheaper.

And as for SSD I'd stay away from them until they fix the sandforce controllers.. I had 3 die on me before I switched to the Marvell one. The sandforce is faster than marvell though.. but if you're jumping from an HDD to SSD you will still get a huge performance boost.

Updated.

To my surprise we are at $1,008 and all of the components have been ordered and most received. The specs are looking phenomenal at this price (mostly due to this project taking place during Black Friday/Cyber Monday week.)

We plan to begin construction in 4 days. I'm already jealous that I don't get to keep it when we're finished.
